Meet Our Patients

Feeding hungry squirrels

Squirrels have to be hand fed a special formula using a syringe [without the needle] and nipple every 2-4 hours (and sometimes in the middle of the night!). Once they get the hang of things, they are enthusiastic diners. They'll hold the tube and stretch out on their hind legs, while sucking in the formula as fast as they can.

As they grow bigger, squirrels are given "mush" bowls, which they attack with gusto. They get very messy!

Baby opossums are brought in to Second Chance as orphans. This often occurs when the mother is hit by a car. Because the mother carries her babies in a pouch, people don't realize there are survivors. It's only when someone checks the mother's pouch that the babies are found. Most can be successfully raised to maturity and released.
